Unforgettable Memory

One of my most unforgettable memory was winning the basketball's Governor Cup when I was in 9th grade.

It was our 2nd competition in 9th grade and our new team that consists of 8th grader as  well as 7th grader. When I was in 8th grade, we had a pretty bad year we only won twice from 10 competitions. So coming to this competition we were pretty pessimistic as we also lose last year on the same competition. It was early September and nearing our mid semester test, but we all focused on just winning the competition. Unlike any other competition, this one was very prestigious as the teams invited was not just from Bandung but also from West Java.

I still remember the technical meeting, we were so nervous, we didn't want any strong teams to face us first. It's a long tournament, we need to play 4 to 5 times to reach the finals. The first team we played was 22 JHS, they were good but we were better and it's a win for us. We all knew though, that it will get even harder as we played. The second team was St.Angela, they were pretty strong. We managed to pull a lead in the 3rd quarter just in time to securely win the match. Still, we played really badly, our coaches gave us motivations to play even better. The 3rd team was, if I'm not mistaken, 2 Ngamprah JHS. They gave us a hell of a fight. They have good stamina and ball movement, but in the end we successfully done our coaches' plan.

So, the semifinal was on my birthday, I was excited as well as nervous. We were up against 47 JHS, we lost to them in previous competition so the tension is high. Thankfully, we were on top of our game, we easily get a lead that we maintain until the final whistle blows. We were so ecstatic as we advanced to the final. We had a practice right before the final and we all just strategizing for the final. We were playing 2 Garut JHS, and honestly it's tough. There're more audience than before, and obviously more tension and the stake was very high.

We never played them so we didn't know what is their playing style, but on semifinal we managed to watch them albeit only for a couple of minutes. We learnt that 2 out of their starting 5 were good, the point guard and their center worked flawlessly. I was the starting five, so they called our name then we sung 'Indonesia Raya'. The 1st and 2nd quarters we were trying to find a rhythm on offensive end. It's no good use, they defended mercilessly and we were having trouble getting to the basket. Fortunately, our defense were solid, we used zone defense while they used man-to-man. A great planned as it was a long match, 10 minutes clean per quarter. Using zone defense we can minimize our energy and focusing on offense more. Our patience payed off, in the 3rd quarter they slowed down and we managed to slip through and get the lead. 4th quarter, we still cautious about their offense but thankfully we can hold the lead and get the win.

It was awesome to say the least, our team and staff got even closer and of course, getting the trophy and certificate as well as experienced made the competition very memorable.

Best regards,

Tizi
